This week, our kindergarteners had a great time exploring the wonderful world of plants! We began our journey by reviewing the differences between living and non-living things, setting the stage for our exploration.
Next, we identified the essential needs of plants for survival, including sunlight, water, air, and soil. To reinforce our learning, we created a colorful flip chart that clearly showcased these vital requirements. But we didn't stop there; we launched an exciting experiment to test our knowledge!
We planted grass seeds in three different cups, intentionally eliminating one of the essential needs—water, sunlight, or soil—in each cup. This hands-on approach will allow us to observe and discover what happens when a plant is missing a crucial element for growth.
We also had a fun (and tasty) activity where we made "dirt" pudding. We whipped up some delightful pudding and layered it with crushed graham crackers and Oreos to represent different layers of soil. For a squirmy surprise, we added a gummy worm on top before tasting our creations! After enjoying our treat, we gathered together to analyze and discuss our favorite parts of this delightful experience.
To wrap up our week, we created a glove garden! We placed five different seeds inside a plastic serving glove, along with a cotton ball soaked in water. We tied it up tight and hung it in the window to see what will sprout. We are so excited to watch our seeds grow!
