May 9-13

We have had a busy week in the Kindergarten classroom. This week was ice cream week. We started by writing about why we should have an ice cream party. Our goal was to convince Ms. Torborg. It must have worked because on Friday, we got to have ice cream! There was a little catch, we had to make it. We each made our own ice cream in a bag. (The end reviews were mixed.) Thursday was Discovery Day. The preschoolers from Stay-N-Play and Kids of the Kingdom joined us for a show by Touch of Magic.

Monday:

In reading, we reviewed the short a sound. Then we completed 3 different worksheets. We had to rearrange letters to spell words, match the word to a picture, and complete the sentence with a word from the word bank.

In Math, we were introduced to telling time on a clock. First, we talked about different ways we can measure time and why we would want to measure time. Then we talked about the different parts of a face clock especially the hour and minute hand. Next, we practicing setting a clock to the hour and writing the digital time. Finally, we completed a few math worksheets that including counting by tens and adding.

In religion, we talked about feelings, the difference between accidents and sins, and the importance of asking for forgiveness.

We also practiced our songs for graduation and completed some one on one testing.

Tuesday:

We also listened to the story, When I Grow Up book by Al Yankovic. We talked about all of the different occupations Billy wanted to do when he grew up. Then we completed a short writing project. We wrote about what we wanted to do when we grew up. After our opening sentence, we had to write 2 or 3 supporting or detail sentences. Then we added a picture.

We also practiced our songs for graduation and completed some one on one testing.

Wednesday:

In reading, we reviewed the short i sound. Then we completed 3 different worksheets. We had to rearrange letters to spell words, match the word to a picture, and complete the sentence with a word from the word bank.

In math, we were introduced to another new game, Subtraction Top-It. subtraction Top-It is just like Addition Top-It only you need to subtract the two numbers. The key is you need to know which number is bigger. You always have to take the smaller number away from the bigger number. And then the person with the smallest answer gets to keep all of the cards. After playing together as a whole group, we broke into partners and played together.

We also reviewed how to tell time to the hour. Then we completed a telling time worksheet.

Thursday:

Today was Discovery Day! The preschoolers from Stay-N-Play and Kids of the Kingdom joined us for an hour as we were entertained by Mark and Lori from Touch of Magic. They had us laughing as they entertained us with their crazy antics.

In reading, we reviewed the short o sound. Then we completed 3 different worksheets. We had to rearrange letters to spell words, match the word to a picture, and complete the sentence with a word from the word bank. We also complete our last writing project. We had to explain why we should have an ice cream party. Once we had our reason, we had to give details to support our reason. When we were done, we colored the picture of an ice cream sundae.

In math, we continued working with functions. First, we completed several function machine charts when we know the function. Then we worked on figuring out the function when we know the input and output numbers. First we had to figure out if the numbers were getting bigger or smaller. Then we had to figure by how much they were changing. Once we figured out the functions, we could predict the answers that would come out with a given number.

In religion, we talked about St. Dominic Savio. St. Dominic Savio died at the age of 14. Before he died, he worked hard to be a good student and teach other boys about Jesus. He is the patron saint of altar boys and his feast day is May 6. As we colored his picture, we watched a video about his life.

Friday:

In reading, we reviewed the short u sound. Then we completed 3 different worksheets. We had to rearrange letters to spell words, match the word to a picture, and complete the sentence with a word from the word bank.

After lunch, we moved right into a big science/cooking project. We started out by watching a couple of videos about why we use salt to make ice cream. Then we made ice cream in a bag! Our recipe was rather simple just milk, sugar, and vanilla. We started in our classroom. We put one tablespoon of sugar, 1/2 cup of milk, and a splash of vanilla in a ziplock bag. Then we headed outside. We put our cream in a big gallon ziplock. Also inside the big bag we added ice (about 3 cups) and rock salt (about 6Tbsp). The final step was to move it and shake it until it was ice cream. We put our mitten and gloves on to keep our hands from getting “REALLY” cold. After about 15 minutes of shaking, we had ice. cream. There were mixed results. Some people really liked their treat and some people didn’t.
