February 20-24
Monday: No School
Tuesday: Our guest reader was Arlene from Casey’s in Madison Lake. She read us one of her favorite stories, Charlie the Ranch Dog. The author wrote the story about her own dog and his life on a ranch. She also brought a us treat. We each got a pencil. We read Nolans’s favorite book, Disney’s Easy to Read Stories. His favorite story is Abu Monkeys Around because he knocks over the apples. We also read Christian’s favorite story, I Was So Mad by Mercer Mayer. I like that his mom doesn’t let him to anything he likes to do. In math, we explored a new kind of number story, the comparison story. A comparison number story compares two things. (Mary has 4 rabbits and 2 chicks. How many more rabbits does she have?) We explored different ways to draw a picture to represent the story. We found the easiest way was to draw the first number of objects in a row and then draw the second number of objects right underneath. In reading, we read a new story, A Rainy Day. Then we learned a new letter & letter sound, Ee. It is a vowel and can be found in the middle of many words. We also played a Vowel Match game on the SMARTboard. We had to read the short vowel word and then match it to the correct vowel sound. This morning Ms. Torborg drew a silhouette/profile of each of us using the overhead projector. Then she cut them out for us. During theme, we cut out a silhouette of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Then we glued our silhouette on a board along with the other two. Then we cut out and glued on words to match the pictures. We also read two stories George Washington: America’s First President and Abraham Lincoln: A Great American President, A Great American.
Wednesday: Our special guest today was Father Schneider. He read us the story The Jester Has Lost His Jingle by David Saltzman. It is about a jester finding laughter in our world. Our special guest reader was Jerry Groebner. He own the Lake Region Times and Groebner Insurance. He read us the story, Catch and Release. It was about a boy and a frog. He also gave us a Hop Along Kit. In math, we learned how to count by twos. We just skipped every other number. We found out that when you count by twos all of the numbers end in either a 2, 4, 6, 8, or 0. Then we worked on estimating. We had to guess how many objects were in a bag. Then we counted the objects. We did this several different times with different bags. We also did a page in our math workbooks. We had to write in the missing numbers on a number line. In reading, we learned two new words, this & do. They were each used in our little book. (We now have another book for our Treasure box.) We also reviewed the letter Ee. We found some words that begin with the short e sound. During theme, we cleaned pennies. First we brainstormed different ways to clean something. We tried just water, just soap, water and soap, and scrubbing with a rag. Then we took some water, vinegar, and salt and mixed it together. Then we dropped some pennies into it. After we let them set for a few minutes, we took them out. The pennies were clean! They looked brand new. We also found out that if we only put the solution on half the penny, only half the penny would get clean. In honor of president’s day, we talked about the President’s job and how he helps our country. Then we created a class book titled “If I were President, I would make a law that....” We each had to think of something we would change if we were President. |
